Hundreds of years after the War of the World devastated humanity, only one nation is still thriving in North America the Empire of the Nunavit, also known as the Empire of the North, where Canada once stood.
From this Empire, young Sire Armand de la Couture travels south with his father by airship on a trading mission to a city-state called Potomick, which was once the capitol of the world's greatest empire, known as Amerka.
There, among the ruins of buildings and museums, he comes upon a sacred site, a temple of a bearded, brooding man, sitting on a throne, looking out upon a rectangular pond. The man is known as Father Abram, and centuries ago, the stories say, he once freed the slaves. He is now worshipped and offerings are left at his feet, for the oppressed people of Potomick pray that a new Father Abram will arise and free the slaves once again.
Armand soon returns to the safety and comfort of his Empire, but takes a critical look at his Empire's society, where indentured servants work for families to work off debts decades old, and Armand begins to ask questions. But soon Armand catches the attention of his Empire's security forces, and he is forced to make a terrible decision to betray his noble family and the Empire that has raised him, or to fight for those who have no voice, who are slaves in name and in deed, struggling to survive in the Empire of the North.
In this stunning debut work of a three-novel series, award-winning winner author Brendan DuBois sets a new world among the ashes of the old, where the humanity-long struggle between freedom and slavery takes place in the ancient lands once known as Canada and America...

The Noble Warrior The Empire of the North Book 1 eBook Brendan DuBois
I had a hard time getting into this book. On one hand I enjoyed the post apocalyptic vibe and how the new world was portrayed. On the other hand, I just didn't think the side story with Randall was necessary. I almost gave up but there aren't that many pages so I kept on. Thankfully, the ending was good but I'm not sure if I will continue the series.Product details

The Noble Warrior The Empire of the North Book 1 eBook Brendan DuBois Reviews
I have been reading Brendan DuBois for a long time, and he is a very entertaining writer, full of interesting
and provocative ideas. "The Noble Warrior" is the first of a three part series set in the future. It expands
on an earlier short story that Brendan wrote; I'm happy he did this, since there's a lot more to be told about
a future society where the dominant North American country is no longer our good old USA. The layering of certain
remaining technology aspects with other lost devices is intriguing. It reminds one of stories about Dark Ages
Europe and their fascination with historical Roman ruins/existing structures, etc. Some lessons to be learned here.
His character portrayal sneaks up on you and grabs you now I am having trouble waiting for parts two and three. Hurry up, please!
It is an interesting plot and I guess for the author to tell the story, the background had to be fabricated. The book isn't really a novel, much too short. The biggest issue I have is the not very realistic characterization of what would happen after a massive world war. In the story the major cities apparently weren't hit at all. I'm not sure what was hit with (I suppose) thermonuclear devices that left large sections of the landscape devoid of any growth, even after many generations. That doesn't jib well with what we know. Look at the two Japanese cities that were bombed with really dirty nuclear bombs and you will note that people are living and have largely rebuilt after a few short years. And, yet in the book large areas are still "hot" and totally uninhabitable. And, the overriding thing is, that people are not likely to act as the book portrays them. Look at the experience from WWII where whole countries were totally devastated during the war, but they had rebuilt and were thriving less than a half century later.
However, if you kind of suspend disbelief, the book is entertaining and is worth a read. But, be warned, the story is just started in this book. You will have to buy more of the series to find out what happens.
